Union Station, Nevermore

Recently I heard about a new space in the old Union Station Building. It’s called Nevermore and there is lots of things involved in it. It has a restaurant, event space, bar, coffee shop, and duckpin bowling. Once I knew a friend was playing a gig there on Sunday night I was all in.

I arrived a little bit later than the rest of my party. I had trouble determining where to enter the building.  A nice gentleman outside pointed to where the front door was.  I walked inside and the vibe was just so cool.  It was library-esque type scene. Lots of leather couches and interesting wall art. The coffee shop was open but I didn’t go inside. The walls were wooden and just somewhere I’d like to hang out. I continue past the bar.  They seemed to have a good drink selection. Finally making it into the large space that I would say was the event room I spotted my friends.  They were sitting at a round table in front of the stage but there were huge banquet style tables in benches also in the space.

Everyone was still deciding on drinks except the friend who had already ordered some sort of coffee from the coffee shop. When the waitress came back she asked her to bring some sugar. The sugar came out in a portion cup with a lid.  Odd way to have sugar, like why not just have individual packages?  My friend dumped the “sugar” into her coffee and took a drink. Unfortunately it was SALT not sugar and I thought she just might be sick right at the table. The waitress didn’t seem to apologetic but did bring her a new cup and another portion cup of sugar. We tasted it this time before she put it in.

The stage wasn’t extremely large but set up nicely. I sat down and started looking at the menu. Service was a bit off and it didn’t help that the music made it hard to hear.  After having a glance at the menu I went to explore the rest of the place. They had a separate room that housed the duckpin bowling alley (6 lanes) and another bar. It also boasted a shelf of board games and a large Sorry board and Connect 4.

Making my way back to the table it was time to order. We started with appetizers, Chef’s special calamari fries and the lettuce wraps(pork belly and chicken). They made it to the table very quickly. The calamari fries were cooked perfectly and not in the least bit tough. I could have eaten the whole plate myself. Lettuce wraps were just okay. They needed more sauce. They were served already assembled which I liked but the pork/chicken lacked any type of flavor. The toppings were shredded carrots, cabbage, fresh jalapeños, and Brussels sprouts.   The plating seemed a bit weird with crudité (carrot and celery sticks) and charred limes.  A little crunch like wonton strips or something would have made them a lot better along with more sauce.

We took a while to decide on the main entrees because honestly we talked about leaving to find another place to eat.  It was Sunday night though so a lot of close places were either already closed or closing soon.  Right before we did order our original server handed us off to someone else which was fine by us.   We decided to go ahead and order. I chose the Chef’s special lamb chops. Two people got the lobster Mac and cheese. Two others tried to order burgers but were told they were out for the night. They then both chose a fried chicken sandwich.

Our meals took an hour extremely long time to come out of the kitchen. The Mac and cheeses showed up first along a side of regular Mac. Then my lamb chops showed. The server then let us know that the chicken was going to take longer because it was still thawing out. The guys enjoyed the lobster Mac and cheese.  It had great flavor and a ton of lobster. The portion size was just a little off for $22. More noodles and the same amount of lobster would have been good.

My lamb chops were over cooked (I ordered medium) but they were still tender. They were set atop a bed of fried potatoes and asparagus. The only issue I had with the dish overall is that it was saturated in balsamic glaze. I mean COVERED. It’s all that I could taste in every single bite. Chicken sandwiches finally showed up after everyone else was pretty much done. They were huge and both people really enjoyed them. The flavor was very good but chicken to breading ratio a little off. The plates had a mound of French fries.

The manager came over to ask if for our troubles we’d like another appetizer. We declined but asked if we could play a game of duck pin bowling. She said of course so once the music was done we headed over. We started on a lane that wasn’t working. Moved to a second lane that only worked for about one frame. Finally got moved to a third lane and this one worked, for the most part. It did keep eating the balls and we had to steal them from other lanes. Once we got half way through the game we realized it was a losing battle and gave up the fight. We headed out and when we got to the front door it was chained and locked. We had to walk back and ask the hostess how to get out of the place

All in all the space is really awesome and could be very successful with some work. The amount of money that was spent on that remodel had to be exorbitant.  I’m not sure what to expect from them over the next few months. Hopefully they figure it out.
